Daniil Medvedev, after sitting out of the Wimbledon Championships, returned to the circuit through the US Open. The Russian who reigned in the last year’s tournament came back stronger with the ranking of World no.1 to his name. However, he couldn’t get past the Aussie who, earlier this year, made a stunning run to the finals in the grass courts of London.

Medvedev has a history of letting the people in the stands affect his game. Earlier Nadal fans irked him in Australia and this time Nick Kyrgios’ player box irritated him during the first set. Here’s what Medvedev has to say about the incident.

Daniil Medvedev explains his outburst

While in the post match conference, the current World No.1 was questioned about his visible frustration during the initial hour of the match. To which he responded, “No, not at all. It was only one time. So it was 6-5 for him, first set, 40-30 on my serve. Just before the second serve, somebody from his box was, ‘C’mon, get him.’ That’s not nice. You shouldn’t do it when you’re in the other’s box before the second serve. I told this to the umpire.”

Thereafter, he added, “I don’t know who exactly it was. I don’t know their names, but we just talked in the locker room. So I respect them like probably I respect almost every other team.”

“But at the end of the match, I was like, C’mon, he shouldn’t do it. It was only once, so probably also it was not like on purpose – I hope. So that’s fine.” The defending champion, after taking down every opponent in straight sets, met Kyrgios for the fifth time on Monday.

In the hard courts of the US Open, with a will to claim a second consecutive trophy, Medvedev locked horns with former World no.13. Daniil Medvedev, after snatching the Los Cabos Open’s trophy from the British tennis professional, Cameron Norrie, suffered an opening round defeat against Kyrgios in the Canadian Masters. The 27-year-old outclassed him in straight sets in the ATP 1000 tournament’s round of 32.

Thereafter, the Australian Open runner-up stepped on the hard courts of the Cincinnati Masters. He thrashed players such as the former World No.10 Denis Shapovalov and 2022 Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz to reach the semifinals. But in the semis Medvedev failed to get the better of Greek ace Stefanos Tsitsipas.
