As he has ended Djokovic’s 33-match winning streak at the Australian Open, the Aussie tennis star recently called Jannik ‘the new Novak.’ However, the controversial player’s statement about his Italian colleague didn’t sit well with a flurry of Nole fans, who expressed their annoyance on social media.

Even during the semifinal match between Djokovic and Jannik, Nick Kyrgios was there in the commentator’s box. After witnessing the young Italian tennis star’s stellar performance against the 10-time champion in Melbourne Park, the Aussie said, “Sinner could be the new Novak.”

Taking note of his on-air comments, a popular tennis journalist tweeted, “Yes @NickKyrgios but not while Novak is still Novak…It ain’t over yet… :-)” Others in the tennis community also came across Kyrgios’ bold assertions, as they flocked to the comments section to drop their reactions. Despite hailing him as an ‘outstanding’ player, one fan said candidly that the 22-year-old is ‘incomparable’ to the Serb at his optimum levels.

The user commented, “As always in history,Novak lost to himself. He wasn’t even at his 60,70% today. Sinner is outstanding, but he’s incomparable to Novak,when Novak’s at his best level.”
