After a thrilling win over world number one Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round, Kyrgios bowed out of the tournament, losing against Karen Khachanov. In the quarter-final match, which lasted three hours and 39 minutes in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Khachanov got the better of Kyrgios in a five-setter thriller.

Further, Kyrgios was visibly disappointed with the result of the match. After the match, he vented his frustration as he smashed his racket on the court. Owing to his actions, the Australian star received a hefty penalty.

After shaking hands with Khachanov and the chair umpire, Kyrgios took out two rackets from his bag and smashed them onto the court.

As a result, he received the biggest fine of the tournament so far owing to his actions. The Australian tennis star received a penalty of $14,000 for throwing a drinks bottle to the ground and then smashing two racquets at the end of the match.

With this, his total fines at the tournament summed up to $32,500. Kyrgios competed in both the singles as well as men’s doubles. He teamed up with his compatriot, Thanasi Kokkinakis. The duo reached the third round of the tournament before losing to the 11th seeds, Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara.

During the post-match press conference after his quarter-final defeat against Karen Khachanov, Nick Kyrgios voiced his disappointment in not making it to the closing stages of the tournament. He said, “It’s just devastating. It’s heartbreaking. Not just for me, but for everyone that I know that wants me to win.”
