“Well, I hated tennis when I was young, so you know, I was very chubby, overweight as a kid, and my mum kinda, she was like, ‘Okay, we gotta get you doing some sport or be active.’ So she dragged me down to the local tennis courts. And I remember I was crying all day hated it, didn’t want to be there. Anyway, I gave it a chance for like, you know, a couple of weeks, couple months, and the coach was like, ‘He’s picking it up pretty quickly.’“

Why Kyrgios’ parents asked him to stick to tennis
Kyrgios loved basketball more than tennis when he was a youngster. He used to play both sports but eventually left throwing hoops for smashing forehands down the line. In his appearance in the recent podcast, he talked about why his parents likely asked him to stick to tennis after the coach said he was picking it up quickly.
“And then that was I guess, that was a defining moment because ever since that coach said that. It’s like my father and my mom put everything into tennis, you know, sacrificed, you know, my dad or my mom had nothing growing up. And I guess they kind of saw me as the person in the family to eventually you know, try and make it and help them out and help the family out.”
Kyrgios became a tennis player and became the favorite of many around the world. But now that he has been absent from the sport for such a long time, his passion for the racket sport may be withering.
