Celebrity couple Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields began dating in 1993, and in 1997, the couple decided to tie the knot. However, the marriage didn’t last long, as fractures in their relationship led to a divorce in 1999. However, when the two were in love, there were plenty of memorable moments.

In an old interview, Agassi and Shields talked about how things unfolded on the day the tennis ace proposed to the Hollywood star. At the time, the couple was enjoying a spectacular sunset view in heavenly Hawaii, and that’s when Agassi sprang a surprise on his unsuspecting girlfriend. However, it was Agassi who was in for a shock after hearing the response of Shields.

Shields’ unexpected response to Andre Agassi

Agassi and Shields took a trip to the beautiful island of Hawaii, where the tennis ace planned to pop the marriage question. The romantic side of Agassi was keen on building up to the all-important moment, but Shields had other ideas up her sleeve.

In episode 10 of the show E! True Hollywood Story, which explored the life of Shields, Agassi spoke about the moment he asked Shields to marry him. In an interview, he said, “When I asked her to marry me that day we had a beautiful sunset and I was talking about isn’t this beautiful and the most magnificent one you’ve seen?” To Agassi’s surprise, Shields replied, “No, I’ve seen better.” 

The couple had a good laugh about it in the interview. Shields revealed how Agassi “was starting to set this whole thing up” before her quirky response left Agassi bemused.

What went wrong with Shields and Agassi?

Not long after Agassi and Shields got married, problems started to emerge in their relationship. Unfortunately, the couple could not resolve their issues, which ultimately caused their divorce in 1999. While Agassi has mostly remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind the divorce, Shields has been vocal about it on multiple occasions.

Agassi’s substance abuse issues contributed significantly to the breakdown in the couple’s relationship. According to Shields, the tennis icon was also quite jealous. The breaking point in the relationship came during the shooting of a FRIENDS episode where Shields made a guest appearance.

According to the script, Shields had to lick actor Matt LeBlanc’s fingers. Agassi watched on as a spectator on the sets. However, it was difficult for him to accept the scene. Shields tried to reason with Agassi, but he wouldn’t listen. Instead, he left the sets on his own, drove to Vegas, and in a fit of rage, smashed his trophies.
