‘No War Please’- Russian Tennis Star Andrey Rublev Pens a Message to the World

Andrey Rublev has had a phenomenal rise to the top. The Russian burst onto the scenes when he won the 2014 French Open boy’s singles title. Further, he turned professional in the same year. Fast-forward to the present day, the 24-year-old has nine singles titles to his credit.

He has also had success in doubles, winning three ATP doubles titles. More importantly, Rublev won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, pairing with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the mixed-doubles.

Rublev is in Dubai to participate in the ATP 500 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. After his semifinal victory yesterday, he penned down a message amidst rising tensions in the world.

Andrey Rublev has a message for the world

The Russian won his semifinal encounter yesterday against the Polish ace Hubert Hurkacz in a three-setter thriller. It was a closely fought match, with Rublev eventually prevailing in the final set tie-breaker. After the match, the 24-year-old wrote a message on the camera which read, “No war please.” Chiefly, his message comes on the backdrop of the rising geopolitical tensions in the world.

Rublev, who is the second seed in Dubai, is looking to win his second tournament of the season after Open 13 Provence in Marseille, France. He has had a good tournament in Dubai so far, winning some tough matches en route to the final.

In the opening round, he defeated Britain’s Daniel Evans in straight sets. Further, in the next round, he was up against Soonwoo Kwon. The Russian prevailed in the second-round encounter, albeit in three sets.

Subsequently, Rublev overcame the challenge of Mackenzie McDonald of the USA in the quarterfinals. Yesterday, he entered the finals, defeating fifth-seed Hubert Hurkacz. In the summit clash, Rublev will face Jiri Vesely, who had earlier defeated World Number 1 Novak Djokovic.
