The American tennis sensation Ben Shelton has had a sensational start to his professional career in tennis. After enjoying a dream run in the Australian Open, the young American star is preparing for the upcoming tournaments. In a recent interview, he established his goals concerning his tennis future, including the type of player he wants to be. He revealed what kind of tennis player he wants to be on the tennis court.

We are in the third month of the 2023 tennis season, and the 20-year-old tennis player has established his name on the professional circuit as one of the future stars. And in his very first Grand Slam participation, the young sensation created history along with Frances Tiafoe.

Ben Shelton reveals what kind of tennis player he wants to be

The young American tennis player stated in an interview with Eurosport that while he appreciates having the audience backing him, he is not trying to be a showman like Nick Kyrgios or Gael Monfils. Despite expressing his reservations against showmanship on the court, he praised Rafael Nadal for being an inspiration. The world no.41 aspires to follow in the Spanish tennis legend’s footsteps and aim high like him.

He said, “Nick Kyrgios or Gael Monfils are not references for me in this respect. I don’t think I am trying to be a showman. I’m just trying to compete at the highest level, whatever that may be. I’m not out there to try to be this ‘showy guy’ who is doing trick shots. So I would say the guy in that aspect that I looked up to was Rafael Nadal.”

The American tennis player clearly stated that he wanted to stand out by competing at a higher level and didn’t want to represent himself as the ‘showy guy.’ Further, he also talked about how he wants to level up his game and play some huge tennis matches against tennis giants like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Shelton wishes to play some big matches this year 

In the same conversation, the 20-year-old rookie player wants to play some huge matches against the remaining big three players. He continued by saying that playing against the 22-time Grand Slam champions, Nadal and Djokovic, was on his bucket list, and that he wanted to test himself against them.
