Just two weeks after the completion of Novak Djokovic‘s triumph in Turin, another Serb created history in Jeddah. This time it’s the 20-year-old Hamad Medjedovic. He became the lowest-ranked champion of the Next Gen ATP Finals on Saturday after defeating Arthur Fils in the grand finale. But the journey would’ve been much tougher for the young Serb if Novak Djokovic hadn’t put him under his wings. Tennis coach Magnus Norman puts light on how Djokovic’s support towards Medjedovic is paying off.

Medjedovic became the first Serbian to win the Next Gen Finals after defeating Fils by 3-4, 4-1, 4-2, 3-4, 4-1 margin at the King Abdullah Sports City. The match lasted for about 2 hours and 11 minutes and fans witnessed a classic moment of resilience from the young Serbian. The 47-year-old tennis coach and former player, Magnus Norman recently appreciated Djokovic’s efforts to carry forward the sport. He penned a two-word appreciation for the Serbian icon. It was just 2 years ago when Djokovic took the responsibility to cover the costs of a professional player, Hamad Medjedovic. Now, the youngster paid off his support with a win at the Next Gen ATP Finals.

Medjedovic’s father had revealed how desperate was the 24 Grand Slam title holder to help his son make a breakthrough to the biggest stage and wanted Medjedovic to help others in the same way. On hearing this story, Norman asked others to read it too. He added, “In a year very much filled with aggression, hate and violence in this world, this is wonderful to read. An act of kindness and giving back without wanting publicity or PR. Well done Novak Djokovic.”

Medjedovic had first met Novak Djokovic while he was training at Djokovic’s academy in Belgrade. The 20-year-old lad went on to describe it as the ‘biggest’ moment of his life.

Medjedovic following in the footsteps of Novak Djokovic

A win at the Next Gen ATP Finals will surely boost the confidence of the youngster for the 2024 season. He has managed to seal a total of 69 aces throughout the tournament. Medjedovic has won 7 out of 14 main draw matches on the ATP in 2023. With this win the two Serbians have now managed to secure both the ATP Finals and Next Gen title. Serbian tennis fans must be on cloud nine with this emphatic achievement of two brightest stars in Serbian tennis.
