Some say they can play at the same level, while some believe that the current generation would demolish those a few decades ago. Nick Kyrgios falls in the latter, especially coming to Novak Djokovic.
The Aussie star has often spoken about the players of the past and put them against the players in the present. He has not given them a glowing review in the past and has only recently given a clarification for holding such thoughts.

The Aussie has also commentated and worked as a host for the sport. Interviewing with The Athletic, Kyrgios talked about how the players of the past would measure up to the current players, especially Novak Djokovic.

He said, “The game was so slow back then. I’ve watched Boris Becker and I’m not saying they weren’t good in their time, but to say that they would be just as good now, it’s absurd,” he says. “A big serve back then was like 197 to 200 (km per hour — about 122mph). People like me, we serve 220 consistently to corners. It’s a whole different ball game.”
Although he believes they wouldn’t have found their way, but they would certainly face a great challenge. “I’m not saying they wouldn’t have found their way,” he says of the yesteryear legends. “But serve and volley, to do it all the time now, you need to be serving 220, because if you serve anything less than 220, bro, Djokovic eats you alive.“
Kyrgios believes they would have a much more difficult time reaching great heights today. This is not the first time he has spoken about the tennis legends and written them off.

Kyrgios believes yesteryear players wouldn’t survive today
Earlier this year, Kyrgios appeared in the Impaulsive podcast and discussed a variety of subjects. When talking about the GOAT of tennis, he gave the names of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but wrote off the likes of Pete Sampras and John McEnroe. He gave the example of Michael Jordan to justify his claims. He said that Jordan could still play today, but Sampras and McEnroe will not be able to keep up.
