The ‘Spider’ Serbian Novak Djokovic lifted an incredible ninth and third consecutive Australian Open title last Sunday. With that, he also equaled Spain’s Rafael Nadal in a special Grand Slam record.

At 33, the Serbian ace defeated the 25-year-old Russian Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the finals, and not even for a moment in the match did he take his eye off the ultimate prize.

Because of his insatiable hunger for Majors, Djokovic is an 18-time Grand Slam champion now. This places him only two Grand Slam titles behind the record 20 titles of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

However, winning a major tournament after turning 30 is not an easy feat to achieve. In fact, Novak Djokovic has won a record-equalling six major titles after turning 30.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal ahead of Roger Federer

There are only four active players who have won a major title after turning 30. They are Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Stan Wawrinka.

Since the 34-year-old Spaniard is almost a year older than the Serbian, he made it to the list first with his six titles. To achieve this record, Nadal has won four French Open and two US Open titles from 2017 to 2020.

Similarly, Novak’s six titles include three Australian Opens, two Wimbledons, and a US Open title from 2018 to 2021, whereas the 39-year-old Swiss maestro’s four titles include two Australian Opens and two Wimbledon titles.

This keeps Federer at the fifth position in the list, at par with tennis legends Ken Rosewall and Rod Laver. Below him are Andre Agassi and his compatriot Stan at two each. Stan’s two titles came at the French Open and US Open in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Indisputably, it is Nadal and Djokovic who will lead this record for many more years to come.

What’s in stock for Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic in 2021?

Following a quarterfinal exit at the 2021 Australian Open, the Spaniard will look forward to winning his fifth straight French Open title. If he does this, he will become the male player with the most Grand Slam titles.

On the other side, Federer continues to be passionate about winning more major titles and might achieve that in Wimbledon. Indeed, that would be a fairy-tale end to his illustrious career.
