As a players’ organization, the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) has quickly grown to become a powerful force in the tennis world. The PTPA, which is led by famous tennis player Novak Djokovic, is committed to helping professional athletes with a wide range of issues that they encounter both on and off the court. Realizing how much injuries affect players’ careers, the PTPA director recently discussed a mission that would offer full support in addressing this ongoing issue.

Novak Djokovic’s PTPA enters the healthcare section

The PTPA launched its MedNet program recently, which will connect players to a global network of specialists, who will assist them with healthcare during or even after a tennis tournament. Recently, PTPA’s Executive Director Ahmad Nassar opened up about the service that will help tennis players maintain a continuous connection with physicians who will help them throughout.

Nassar said, “If a player hurts their wrist at a tournament. They would see the on-site doctor for immediate treatment. After that, they leave the tournament city to return home. At this point, players are on their own and won’t see that doctor until the next year. They may ask agents or other players for referrals to wrist specialists – maybe someone’s dealt with something similar in the past?”

Along with that, he also highlighted that rather than being dependent on anecdotal advice, MedNet will provide resources and data just to guide tennis players toward achieving better health.

The tennis players’ association is prepared to establish a welfare committee with primary health care services for the players in order to address the various issues and concerns that arise after returning home from the same injury. Not only that, the deputy executive director of the association also opened up about the sad reality of what tennis players go through when it comes to dealing with injuries.

The sad reality of the tennis healthcare system

According to Reuters, the deputy executive director, Romain Rosenberg, shared a shocking truth regarding how even big players like Novak Djokovic lack healthcare facilities from time to time. He stated, “The ‘star’ players have access to a certain level of care, but the reality is even the Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinners don’t have at hand all specialists.”

Rosenberg continued, “They may sustain an injury that’s so specific that they don’t have access to that … at the lower end of the rankings, they rely on local doctors and don’t have access to the same level of advice, so we’re levelling the playing field.”

In addition, he also highlighted how lower-ranked tennis players actually rely on local physicians because they don’t have proper access to the level of advice they need to play a better game. However, just to improve the healthcare side of the sporting world and give tennis players an edge over the same, the PTPA is ready to bring about a change in the tennis arena.
