Serena Williams’ ex-coach reasons why Novak Djokovic lost in the Wimbledon final

The tennis world was left in shock after Novak Djokovic’s unexpected loss in the Wimbledon 2023 final. Djokovic’s performance was below his usual standards, and many wondered what had gone wrong for the Serbian tennis ace.

In the aftermath of this surprising upset, Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena Williams‘ former coach, offered his perspective on Djokovic’s defeat. In an interview, he said, “It was a mental match. The grand slam match is supposed to be tense. He could have killed the match but he didn’t. In the situation he is now, he is really beatable in those matches because of the weight of the history. I think being this ultimate favorite all the time and playing for history, it has to be a burden, and Carlos played freely.”

According to the high stakes of the match, Patrick feels that since Novak had to fulfill the expectations of so many fans, he could not take the big shots that he would have otherwise. But Carlos was free to play his game.

Mouratoglou also talked about the strategy Alcaraz used during his match

During the same interview, Patrick also talked about what Carlos did differently than Novak. He said that the match was quite intense for both of them. But Carlos did not have any pressure on him. He took the big shots and played freely. He played like an underdog who could shine all the time.

Since Novak had this GOAT title to prove, it took a toll on him. But Carlos did not have anything to prove. He played his best without being tense and played some of the shots that Novak avoided because he did not want to lose a point.
