In the aftermath of this surprising upset, Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena Williams‘ former coach, offered his perspective on Djokovic’s defeat. Mouratoglou, who has worked with some of the biggest names in tennis, sympathized with Djokovic, suggesting that the weight of history had crumbled him during the final.

In an interview, he said, “It was a mental match. The grand slam match is supposed to be tense. He could have killed the match but he didn’t. In the situation he is now, he is really beatable in those matches because of the weight of the history. I think being this ultimate favorite all the time and playing for history, it has to be a burden, and Carlos played freely.”
