The 2022 season has been a turbulent one for Novak Djokovic. He has had major highs and lows going into the French Open. The year began on a controversial note after he was denied a chance to defend his Australian Open title owing to his deportation from Australia. Further, he has had an up and down form this season. He had early losses in Dubai and Monte Carlo before digging deep at the Serbia Open and winning the Rome Masters title.

Recently, the ATP and the WTA announced a massive decision. The two bodies decided to strip Wimbledon of ranking points after the tournament banned Russian and Belarusian players from participating this year. This ruling has caused a major blow to Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic set to lose the top spot in the ATP rankings
In the wake of the decision to strip the tournament of ranking points, 2021 Wimbledon points will drop off as usual at the end of this year’s championships, and so Novak Djokovic will lose 2,000 points and his number 1 ranking.

Last year, Djokovic defeated Matteo Berrettini in the finals of Wimbledon to lift his 20th Grand Slam title. He is the defending champion at Wimbledon this year and was due to defend 2000 ranking points won last year.

However, with ranking points no longer available for this year’s Wimbledon Championships, the Serb will lose them and as a result, will have to surrender his Number 1 ranking.
Djokovic handed a tough French Open 2022 draw
The 34-year-old is also the defending Roland Garros champion and the top seed at the tournament this year. He opens his campaign against the Japanese, Yoshihito Nishioka. Further, in the quarterfinals, he will potentially face the ‘King of Clay’, Rafael Nadal. Additionally, Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz will also be eying the finals spot in the same half of the draw as Djokovic and Nadal.
