Novak Djokovic’s ‘Yelling’ and Racket Throwing Theatrics Used as the Benchmark to Explain Mere Mortals’ Vulnerability

Earlier this year, the former coach of Novak Djokovic, Goran Ivanisevic made a startling admission about the Serb’s behavior. He revealed that Djokovic is not an easy guy to coach as he often vents his frustration at his own team. Additionally, on numerous occasions, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has been spotted shouting and screaming at his box during the matches. All this pointed in one direction which former tennis player, Andrea Petkovic highlighted.

After a glorious last year, things haven’t been going Djokovic’s way this season. As a result, he announced a split with his coach, Goran Ivanisevic. However, Djokovic’s mentality ahead of his matches didn’t paint a good picture.

Recently, the German former tennis player was present on the Racquet’s Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast where she compared the mentality of Djokovic with other players before getting on the court. She said, “Just go to a practice warm-up session of Novak Djokovic before a match. And this guy has one wins 99 out of 100 matches he plays – and he’s yelling at his team members.”

Further, she went on to add, “He’s throwing his racket. He’s so nervous, so stressed out. And if he’s nervous before a match, imagine how us other mortals feel.”

Despite being a champion player on the court, Djokovic is infamous for his show of anger and frustration when things don’t go as per his plans. Take the example of this year, when the Serb suffered an unexpected loss at the hands of Luca Nardi at Indian Wells. During the match, he was upset with his opponent’s movement, which the umpire didn’t pay heed to. Subsequently, he vented out his frustration at the chair umpire and the argument went on for quite some time. This episode also invited a lot of talk from the tennis community.

The video of Djokovic’s argument with the chair umpire went viral on social media as thousands of fans reacted to it. It also caught the eyes of Rennae Stubbs, who was left unimpressed with the World Number One’s behavior. As a result, she commented, “Novak is 100% wrong here.”

It was one of the Serb’s worst defeats of his career as he went down against Nardi in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. With the clay-court season picking up, Djokovic is yet to win a title this year. As a result, he’ll have to pull up his socks and maintain his composure to have any chance of winning a title in the upcoming tournaments.
