The Wimbledon Championships is one the most prestigious tournaments of the year for several reasons. One reason is that the grass major has several traditions which have been in place for more than a century and are still followed diligently.

Many players also have traditions of their own. Novak Djokovic’s case is particularly interesting. If he wins the grass major, he eats the grass of the center court. Now with the Wimbledon on the horizon, the Djoker took part in an exhibition match on grass and won. After which he said something quite remarkable. Let’s find out what he said.

Novak Djokovic won’t break Wimbledon tradition

The Djoker is one player who does not participate in any matches between the French Open and Wimbledon. It has worked wonders for him as he currently holds seven Wimbledon titles. However, he decided to change the status quo and played against Frances Tiafoe at an exhibition match on grass.

The match between the two players was a tough competition as it went to three sets. Djokovic won the first set, and Tiafoe won the second set. The last set was a super tie-breaker which went on for 17 points. The Serbian eventually earned a great victory as he triumphed over Tiafoe. When the match got over, the Serbian was asked if he would eat the grass at the Hurlingham Club court as well.

He stayed consistent with his tradition and said, “I only eat Wimbledon grass.”

After beating Tiafoe, the Djoker is eyeing the Wimbledon trophy as he looks to equal Federer’s record of eight wins at Wimbledon, and eat grass at the center court once again.

Why the Serbian eats grass?

With his first Wimbledon victory in 2011, Djokovic entered the big three. He beat Rafael Nadal in four sets to attain his third grand slam victory. As he was overwhelmed with emotion, he collapsed, and as he was getting up, he ate some grass. The Serbian later revealed that he did that because he wanted to do something different after winning the tournament.
