Matteo Berrettini went through a surgery on his right hand

After withdrawing from the Miami open, the Italian world no.6 wanted to recover quickly to get ready for the clay-court season. However, on his Instagram post, we see him lying on a bed showing his right hand. According to Berrettini, he has gone through a minor injury after consulting with various medical experts.

“My team and I have been speaking to medical experts since my withdrawal from Miami with a right hand injury. Following multiple scans and assessments we decided a minor operation was the best solution to ensure a full and quick recovery.”

My doctor and team are already discussing plans for me to get back on-court. I will provide an update as soon as this plan is finalized. Thanks very much as always for all the support.”

Will Berrettini play at the French Open?

The decision to go through surgery was certainly an interesting one. Although it will take time to heal, he’s hoping to make a comeback soon, possibly at the French Open.

Earlier, he reached pre-quarters at Indian Wells and looked all set to make a good run at the tournament. Unfortunately, he lost to Miomir Kecmanovic after a tough battle. In the Miami Open opener, he was scheduled to play Juan Manuel Cerundolo but withdrew instead.

Owing to the surgery, he could miss most of the clay-court events before the French Open. It will be interesting to see if can eventually make it to Paris. Otherwise, his chance of a comeback will be at Wimbledon, where he reached the finals last year.
