The year 2023 was a special one for World Number 1, Novak Djokovic. After a turbulent time during the 2022 season that saw him miss many big tournaments owing to his vaccination status, the Serb came back strongly to rule men’s tennis yet again. Out of the four Grand Slam tournaments, Djokovic won in three of them. On this note, his former coach, Boris Becker, had a few words of affirmation for his former disciple.

Djokovic came agonizingly close to winning the Calendar Grand Slam this season. He, however, lost in the final of the Wimbledon Championships against Carlos Alcaraz. Becker praised the Serb for having a special season and opened up about his shocking Wimbledon final loss.

During an interview, Becker revealed, “Novak is the dominator of the tennis scene – he has won three out of four Grand Slams [in 2023], then came second in that fabulous Wimbledon final against [Carlos] Alcaraz.”

Further, he went on to add, “For me, that was the best match of the year. With all due respect to all the other winners, Djokovic against Alcaraz was out of this world.”

When Becker and Djokovic decided to part ways

Although the two ended their partnership, Becker and Djokovic have always maintained a cordial relationship. While Becker helped Djokovic prepare for big tournaments, the latter executed it perfectly on the court. However, like many good things, their partnership also came to an end.

Talking about their separation, Becker said, “Three years together, where we win everything, repeatedly…. Let’s say the book was written. I think he was tired, he took a break and I took one too. The perfect love story was coming to an end. There was nothing more.”
