Losing a match after coming close in the finals is truly heartbreaking, and that is what Grigor Dimitrov went through when he lost the Paris Masters title to the Serbian tennis legend, Novak Djokovic. The Bulgarian tennis star has been plagued by injuries and bad form in recent years, plummeting to world No.33 in 2022. However, as we reach the end of the current season, Dimitrov has seen an upturn in form. But that couldn’t stop Novak Djokovic from winning a record-extending 7th title in Bercy. Thus, the physical and emotional toll had him in tears after losing the final.

After seeing the emotional reaction of his opponent, Djokovic went ahead to console him with a hug during his interview. Subsequently, during his runner-up speech, he disclosed the reason behind his tears. So, what actually made him cry? Was it the loss or was it something else?

Grigor Dimitrov opens up about the tears he had in his eyes after the match

Dimitrov was seen crying as he sat on his bench after he lost to Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters. The one-sided defeat overwhelmed him , and the world number 17 could not hold back his tears as he failed to win his first Masters 1000 title in the last six years.

While talking about his reaction, he explained, “It’s difficult to explain emotions, I think. You want it. You know, it’s tough when it doesn’t happen. Only I know, in a way, without, like, feeling sorry for myself, what I’ve gone through the past months on and off the court. I don’t want to have them as something negative. I’m human, after all. At the end of the day, I think just the buildup not only of the last two weeks, the last months of hard work, and the big trip in China, everything has been kind of, in a way, snowballing like day after day, match after match. Of course, in the end, I was so close to making something that I wanted to do for such a long time.

During his speech, he made sure to clear the air by mentioning that they were not all sad tears. They are happy tears too, and that he is just overwhelmed because of the amazing journey he has had so far. We are sure the next season will bring wonderful things for him given the work he has put. In fact, the crowd was so enchanted by his crying that they started cheering for him. Even his opponent made sure to give him a hug.

And when Djokovic saw that Dimitrov was feeling low, he went to him and gave him a hug. He also said that he was sorry that Dimitrov lost.

Once the crowd started chanting his name, he instantly wiped tears from his face and thanked all the fans for supporting him throughout the tournament. He shared how he was very grateful for the people around him and this wouldn’t have been possible without them.
