“Carlos is like you can’t take your eyes off of him when he’s playing right coz he does all these crazy sh-ts and he’s able to pull off anything,” – Andy Roddick admires Carlos Alcaraz’s incredible ability to pull masses. Gaining such popularity in this age can add a bit of extra pressure and the pressure is not always restricted to the courts. Well, it can make a significant impact on scheduling and take a toll on a player, both physically and mentally. So, Roddick heaps praise on his fandom but at the same time, he recently asked the Spaniard to take some tough calls.
Carlos Alcaraz has played a total of 61 matches this season on the Tour. Apart from that, he has played quite a few exhibition matches this season. Be it the ‘Netflix Slam’ in March, ‘Six Kings Slam’ in October or the recent ones at Madison Square Garden and Charlotte, Alcaraz never failed to entertain his fans with his flamboyant tennis! It was a full house at both venues in America. After seeing this amount of craze for the Spaniard in America, Andy Roddick was recently spotted gushing over Alcaraz for his incredible stardom at such a young age.
During a recent episode of the ‘Served with Andy Roddick,’ the 42-year-old American tennis legend said, “He’s (Alcaraz) fully aware of what he is now. He’s one of the biggest global sports stars we have, he’s the celebrity in the room amongst sports celebrities. I think people are thirsty to see him, thirsty to watch him.” However, he believes fulfilling this thirst of crazy tennis fans, can prove costly at times! But why, though?

Earlier this year, we saw Carlos Alcaraz leading the chorus of criticism directed towards the packed tennis schedule. He said, “During the next few years, it’s going to be even more mandatory tournaments. Probably they are going to kill us in some way.“ So, according to Andy Roddick in order to avoid these kinds of situations during the season, Alcaraz needs to find a solution. What can be the solution according to Roddick? “He’s sort of at the point where he doesn’t want to disappoint anyone, and that’s a tough situation, it really is. He’s going to have to learn how to schedule, how to say no, maybe slightly disappoint someone, sometimes to keep his sanity over time,” said the American.

“What I don’t accept is ‘Hey, I didn’t have a long enough off-season.’ I don’t want to hear about it in Australia if he’s not feeling great, that’s it, I don’t want to hear about it,” said Roddick. However, despite raising a bit of concern, Roddick didn’t fail to reveal what really impressed him the most after seeing Carlos Alcaraz play in these exhibition events in Charlotte. What did he say?

He said, “My kids loved this exho more than any other tennis match they’ve ever been to. My kids were losing their minds. I didn’t know if they were going to make it through the whole thing. Couldn’t have been more pumped up.” He was even quite impressed with Carlos Alcaraz’s conduct during the event. Roddick even credited him for rewriting the book on players’ behavior during an exhibition event. He felt that Carlos Alcaraz didn’t act like he was getting money to be there and even called him the “safest” bet for any exhibition organizers.
“He (Alcaraz) doesn’t act like someone who’s there to get paid. He acts like someone who is trying to add value…I’ve seen him at the open obviously, but you’re up in the suites and I mean, it’s just next-level talent and then he does it all with a sneaky smile on his face, in on all the jokes, knows when to bring people in. I was like, it’s the most thirstless stardom I think I’ve ever seen,” said Roddick. What are your thoughts on his observations on Carlos Alcaraz? Did you feel the same while watching him?
