

Taylor Fritz, the American star, recently shared a strong message for his haters in an exclusive interview with CLAY for the Diriyah Tennis Cup in Riyadh. He slammed the haters for questioning his loss against an injured Rafael Nadal at 2022 Wimbledon. Fritz is not reluctant to express his opinions on controversial topics. The North American sees things differently and stated why winning big championships is simpler than ever.

Fritz, the World No 8 tennis player, thinks the sport has to attract younger viewers. He thinks the audience is driven by drama and competition between players who don’t get along.
Fritz shares a message on his loss against Rafael Nadal
In the 2022 Wimbledon quarterfinal, Rafael Nadal defeated Fritz, 3-6 7-5 3-6 7-5 7-6. (4). Due to an abdominal injury, Nadal was unable to participate in the game. Fritz faced criticism after losing to Nadal who was injured. The American goes on to describe how Nadal stayed efficient throughout the match and ultimately won. In the exclusive yet emotional interview, Fritz said, “People don’t know tennis as we know tennis. They thought you know, Rafa slicing all of his backhands, they think that’s because he had bad abs. In any match Rafa has played against me, he slices his backhands. It is his strategy, it’s smart.”

The American player also explained that Nadal didn’t want to hit over a backhand because Fritz had a shoulder-high forehand to battle it with. He also chimed that Nadal always slices the play against him. Nadal doesn’t allow Fritz to score match points. He also explained, “I saw a million people like: ‘Oh, he couldn’t hit backhands and you lost to him’. No, like, that’s how he plays me..”

Fritz also clarified, “.. and the only difference in the game was his serve and that made it tougher for me.” The American made every effort to remain competitive in the championship match, but his campaign was over after the match tiebreak. Nadal prevailed despite his abdominal injury following a valiant effort. The Spaniard had taken a medical break midway through his match with Fritz. Even though he was clearly in pain, he won the final two sets 7-5, 7-6 (10-4). Fritz gave it everything, but he was heartbroken to leave the court because he had missed a huge chance to move on to the Wimbledon semifinal.
Fritz triumphed over Nadal in his first-ever ATP Finals match
In the seventh game, Fritz had two break points, while in the third game, he had one. The American had missed his previous break points in the first set, but he quickly took a 3-0 lead in the tie-break and won it with ease.
