Roger Federer decided to skip the Tokyo Olympic Games after his poor exit from the Wimbledon Championships. As a precautionary measure, Federer chose to skip the tournaments leading up to the US Open. He also withdrew from this week’s Cincinnati Open, along with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams. His last competitive match was the quarterfinal against Hubert Hurkacz at the Wimbledon Championships.

Well, it’s (Federer’s new knee surgery) a pity for everybody. We love watching him play. Hopefully we can still see him back on tour, because I think that’s what he wants. That’s what everybody wants,” said Medvedev in his post match interview after his final.

Federer has been suffering a knee issue since 2019. He has undergone several surgeries on his right knee and that has hampered his form. However, Federer is not easily beaten and is determined enough to return to the ATP Tour and win a title.
