‘Playing to Try and Break Records’ – Andy Murray Details How His Mindset Varies From That of Rafael Nadal

Andy Murray, the British tennis professional, is one of the best players on ATP. In fact, he is a part of bing four alongside Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. Further, Murray has held the ranking of world No.1 for a record 41 weeks.

However, the Brit has been facing problems for quite some time now because of his recurring injuries. He underwent two hip surgeries recently to keep himself moving on the court. Hence, people often deduce that his and Rafael Nadal’s situations are quite similar. Because a pestering foot injury is troubling the Spaniard as well. Though when the media confronted him about the same, he denied it.

For Andy Murray, the driving force is different

The Brit, while speaking to the press, spoke about how his struggle aim differs from the 22 times Grand Slam champion. He said, “[My motivation] comes from enjoying the sport, loving the sport. My situation is a bit different to his, with the operation that I had.”

Further, he added, “I believe he is playing to try and break records and win the major events. Absolutely, you have to love it and be willing to play through some pain as you become an older athlete, but I think it is easier to play through the pain when you are competing for major titles.”

Thereafter, he spoke about his goal. “I feel like our situations are different, but ultimately the reasons I am still playing are because I love the game, and because I still think I can compete right at the highest level.” Murray confessed. Further, Murray last locked horns with the World No.4 in the semifinals 2016 Madrid Open, where he got the better of him in straight sets of 7-5, 6-4.

What is Murray up to?

Andy Murray gave flashes of his old self in the last few months. He made it up Sydney Classic finals in January and trashed Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov in the clay courts of the Madrid Open 2022. Currently, he is honing his skills for the upcoming grass based Grand Slam by playing in the Stuttgart Open.

The three times Grand Slam champion defeated the Australian Christopher O’Connell in the first round of the ATP 250 event. He got the better of the 28-year-old in straight sets of 6-4, 6-3 and is gearing up to avenge his Indian Wells defeat. Murray will clash with Alexander Bublik, the 24-year-old Kazakhstan professional on Thursday for a seat in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
