In today’s day and age, technology has become an integral part of sports. Take any sport, and you’ll find technological advancements over the years. Tennis is no exception. In an extremely competitive sport, the margin for errors is decreasing day by day. There have been growing calls to replace the line judges completely with the Hawk-eye technology.

John McEnroe in favor of eliminating warmups before matches

During the WNYC Studios podcast, the American tennis legend opened up about the ways to make tennis more popular. He said, “We have to try and do a lot of things. Change the rules. If you really want to make the game more popular to me, no umpires on the court, no linesmen. You don’t need linesmen. They have already proven they can’t see anything over the course of last 50 years. So, let’s move on from that and get where it would be like an edge with the players. Maybe the players would think they’d be cheating with each other.”

Further, he went on to add, “There’s a lot of different ways you can do it, but the point is trying different things. I’m a proponent of having no warmup. To me, why the hell do we need warmup? Are you a boxing fan? Do they go out in the ring and start pitter-patter each other five minutes before they try to knock each other into another state?”

Taking the example of boxing, he said, “To me, the idea of guys coming out like boxing, on this side is Roger Federer and you go through the thing and jump it around and this side is Rafael Nadal and then first ball means out.”

McEnroe wants Emma Raducanu to come back stronger

After her sensational US Open victory last year, Raducanu has had a quiet 2022 season. In the recently concluded Wimbledon Championships, she bowed out of the second round. Subsequently, McEnroe called for the British star to “back up the hype” and put on a good show in the US Open.
