In the world of tennis, Carlos Alcaraz is a name that has stunned everyone with his meteoric rise in the game. His performances have been nothing short of sensational while capturing hearts with his exceptional skills. However, amid the glitz and glamour of success, the desire for materialistic things can often take over. The same was the case with the young Spaniard as well. However, coming to his rescue was his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero.

In an interview recently, the former ATP pro turned coach is helping him stay focused by sharing a story about Rafael Nadal‘s victory at Wimbledon that eventually allowed him to lay his hands on his long-term desire.

In a recent interview, Juan Carlos Ferrero came ahead and shared insights into their coaching philosophy. He talked about the importance of setting goals akin to tennis legend Rafael Nadal’s journey. Ferrero suggested that Alcaraz should focus on his personal development without thinking about indulging in luxuries.

Drawing from Rafa’s anecdote about earning an Aston Martin after winning Wimbledon, Ferrero suggested that he wants to instil a similar goal-oriented approach towards Alcaraz. He suggested that aspirations can go even beyond material rewards.

“Everything has its moment. He was too young to think about this kind of situation. He had to think a little further, in tennis, in developing himself a little more as a person and from there, when you get a little older, you can give yourself some whim, which in the end you also live with dreams. I know the anecdote about Rafa (Nadal), who wanted to buy an Aston Martin and his father (Sebastián) told him that if he won Wimbledon he would buy it for him, but that he wouldn’t do it until then (smiles),” said Juan Carlos Ferrero.

“And it was a goal that in the end he won and then bought it. I also like to set goals for Carlos, not just that if he wins this he buys that, not just material things. And with that we keep our hopes very strong,” he further continued.

Thus, despite being from different generations, both Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz have a similar mindset that is focused towards their overall development. While Alcaraz’s coach suggested that the young Spaniard should focus more on himself, he has set some personal goals which will allow him to pursue his dreams, should he manage to achieve them.

While talking about Carlos, he also made his feelings clear about the differences that he finds in today’s generation as compared to his own time.

Juan Ferrero reveals major difference between today’s generation and his time

Further in the interview, he talked about the major difference that separates today’s younger generations in tennis as compared to his time. He said that today, the internet has taken over the world and players are always on their phones which is not at all a good thing. He further said that this is something that was not very evident during his time.

“Obviously, this is the generation of electronics; It already makes them different. In the world of social networks, being on the phone all the time is something that can be worrying, because it clouds the reality of things a little,” said Ferrero.
