Recovering Stan Wawrinka Teases Fans Over His Foray Into the NFT World

Stan Wawrinka is one of the many tennis players who had to cut short his 2021 ATP season owing to an injury. The Swiss tennis sensation last played a singles match at the Qatar Open, where he lost in the second round to Lloyd Harris.

Post this defeat, the former world no.3 decided to undergo surgery for an injury on his left foot. Since then, there were numerous instances where fans thought the Swiss would make an appearance but they all went in vain as he had to curtail his season this year.

Stan Wawrinka enters the NFT market as he announces the ‘Ballman’ project

Wawrinka is yet to announce his tour-level plans for next year. In the meanwhile, the three-time Grand Slam champion forayed into the NFT space as he took to Twitter to announce the ‘Ballman’ project.

Hey guys. I’ve been injured for nine months, not playing tennis, and I miss it a lot. And I’m happy to announce the Ballman Project. Are you ready?” said Stan in the short clip posted.

While the complete details are yet to be revealed, from the surface, it looks like a collection of tennis balls (to be sold as NFTs) that are linked to Stan Wawrinka. The NFTs that are about to be sold might have a strong connection to Wawrinka’s memorable victories over the years on the ATP tour.

Not just Wawrinka, a lot of tennis players already became part of non-fungible tokens. Starting with Serena Williams on the WTA tour, an NFT created by Naomi Osaka also hit the market this year.

On the men’s side, Andy Murray’s historic win at 2013 Wimbledon became a digital art and sold at an auction for $177,000.

Wawrinka is looking to make an impact at the Australian Open next year

Coming to the ‘Ballman’ project, the event will start from the 25th of this month. In days to come, Wawrinka might reveal more details pertaining to the same.

The Swiss tennis player has been a successful campaigner on the ATP tour till 2017 before knee injury began to trouble the one-handed backhander. It took a while for Wawrinka to see success on comeback.

At the Rotterdam Open in 2019, the Swiss was able to reach the finals, where he lost to Gael Monfils. The same year, he overpowered Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 at the US Open. The match wasn’t finished as the Serb withdrew after losing the first two sets.

With the exact details regarding his comeback tournament still known, the Swiss might be expecting a successful stint at the Australian Open next year.
