There is no denying that Rafael Nadal is an absolute delight to watch on clay courts, where he has reigned supreme over the past many seasons. The Spaniard’s stellar clay court performances have always managed to pique the interest of many in the tennis community, including Rick Macci. Ahead of his opening-round match at the Madrid Open, the legendary American tennis coach hailed the 22-time singles Grand Slam champion for his on-court prowess and work ethic.
Back in 2005, the ‘King of the Clay’ marked his first triumph at the Madrid Open, where he overcame Ivan Ljubičić in a five-set thrilling championship game. Reminiscing about the same, Rick Macci couldn’t hold himself back from lauding Nadal ahead of his opener. He tweeted, “April 25th 2005 19 years ago a lefty with a beyond brutal heavy wicked topspin forehand and a work ethic like no other broke into the top TEN and RED CLAY BECAME HIS BEST FRIEND. @RafaelNadal”
