In recent times, there has been a growing debate over the nature of tennis surfaces and the playing conditions. According to many players, the courts have become slower as compared to the past, making play more difficult and exhausting. Take for example Daniil Medvedev. The Russian tennis star took a sarcastic dig at Indian Wells’ surface for being one of the slowest hard courts. Months later, the former World Number 1 has been involved in a similar situation. However, this time, he has found some opposition in the form of his own fellow ATP star.

Medvedev is in China where he’s participating in the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters. The 27-year-old found playing conditions unusual, to which he made an honest confession.

Hours ago, the World Number 3 took on Cristian Garin of Chile in the second round of the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters. The Russian star broke hardly any sweat as he defeated his Chilean opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. However, after the match, Medvedev strongly questioned the surface at this year’s tournament.

During the post-match interview, he said, “To go back to back tournaments so fast, different balls, different surface, so that’s very tricky. Before was one of the probably the fastest on tour. Now, I don’t know what’s slower here or Indian Wells. So yeah, it is what it is, have to play like this. I mean, I managed to even on slow hard courts this season to play well. SO that’s what I’m going to try to do.” However, fellow ATP player, Taylor Fritz was not in agreement with Medvedev’s comments.

The American took to Twitter to pen down his views, saying, “Courts are actually as fast as they always are…. The ball we switched to this week is just really slow.” Meanwhile, Medvedev has often spoken about the nature of surfaces openly. Earlier this year, he vented his frustration out at the chair umpire at Indian Wells.

At the mid-game interval during the round-of-32 clash, Medvedev taunted the umpire, “I’m gonna pee as slow as this court. The court is slow so I go slow,” before taking a bathroom break.
