‘RIP’ – Heartbroken Boris Becker Mourns the Saddening Loss of 78-Year-Old German Soccer Legend

The 1974 FIFA World Cup saw magic unfurl on the soccer field. Star-studded teams of West Germany and the Netherlands contested the final. The former eventually went on to win the title, their second trophy back then. One star of the event was Bernd Holzenbein, who dazzled fans with his skills. In sad news, Holzenbein passed away aged 78. Tributes began to flow following his saddening loss. German tennis legend Boris Becker also made his feelings felt on this matter.
Becker took to social media and joined thousands of fans in paying tributes to the soccer legend. He shared a glimpse of Holzenbein lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy via a story on his official Instagram handle. Additionally, he wrote, “RIP Bernd,” denoting how heartbroken he was with his compatriot’s loss.
Holzenbein left a massive hole behind in German football. He inspired the next generation of soccer stars with his exploits on the field. While he passed away with his family beside him, his former club, Eintracht Frankfurt, termed him the greatest ever in the club’s history.

The 78-year-old legend was a crucial figure in the 1974 World Cup final. His team had gone a goal down in that match, but he earned a penalty to help his team make a comeback. Subsequently, West Germany went on to win 2-1 to lift the title. Meanwhile, German teams paid their tributes to the legend.

Holzenbein played for Eintracht Frankfurt and also returned as a vice-president and a manager after his retirement. The club released a statement, saying, “An Eintracht fan through and through. A legend, as it is written in the books. One of the greatest we have ever had,” announcing his untimely passing.
