Roger Federer Imagines Laver Cup Future with Rafael Nadal in an Endearing Confession

The Laver Cup holds a special place in the heart of the former tennis ace, Roger Federer. Back in 2022, the Swiss Maestro’s emotional farewell to the racket game unfolded at the international indoor hard-court men’s team tournament. Now it looks like the 20-time singles Grand Slam champion might make a return to the esteemed team competition, albeit in a different role.

Federer recently made a visit to San Francisco, which is the site for the next edition of the Laver Cup. Meanwhile, the former world No. 1 player also brought to light his plans for the tournament, as he aims to take up a new stint alongside his former ATP colleague, Rafael Nadal.

In a conversation with the San Francisco Chronicle, Federer was asked if he envisions donning a coach’s hat for Team Europe. The Swiss tennis icon said, “I see myself doing that one day,” as he plans to do it with his former tennis rival and another member of the ‘Big 3,’ Rafael Nadal. He added, “Maybe it evolves that Rafa and I will do it together. I would be super flexible.”

As he aims to take on coaching duties, Federer also made it clear that it is “not for now,” as he is aware of the current captains, Björn Borg and John McEnroe. So the question now arises: when will the Swiss maestro mark his return to the international event as a coach?

The tennis veterans Björn Borg and John McEnroe have captained and coached Team Europe and Team World, respectively, since the inaugural edition of the international event. However, it looks like the tennis community might get to witness a change in these roles as Federer talked about his plans for the next generation on the tour.
