Throughout his years as a professional tennis player and beyond, there’s one person who has always been by Roger Federer‘s side through all the thick and thin of his life, his wife, Mirka Federer. From giving up on her tennis career to supporting the Swiss legend, she did everything she could in her power to make sure that her husband reached the top. To top things up, Roger Federer never shied away from recognizing the immense efforts that his wife made.

Traveling back in time, Fed reflected on one of the most crucial times of his career, a time when he was juggling between his professional tennis career and the joy of being a new father. Highlighting the things that the couple went through, the Swiss great talked about how, despite giving birth to twins, Mirka managed to stay at the top. He also reflected on why he always calls her his ‘rock‘.

In 2009, the Federer family stepped on a significant journey, where professional tennis got merged with parenthood as well. As an American journalist familiar with the challenges of long-haul travel with young children, Christopher Clarey observed the Federers’ unique approach to their first family outing.

Stepping aside from the trend of economy-class discomfort, the Federers opted for a private jet to Montreal. The couple was helped by a dedicated nurse. The decision to include a nurse was to make sure that the newborns did not feel any kind of discomfort. However, despite this, Roger Federer highlighted Mirka’s hands-on approach while describing Mirka’s selfless approach to handling late-night feedings and diaper changes. This made her an inspiration to Federer.

“That’s a big help, but Mirka is really hands-on,” Federer said. “Mirka doesn’t mind getting up in the night, doesn’t mind feeding the babies at whatever time, changing the nappies. For her, if she can’t do it, it’s like she’s missing out on something.”

But this was not it. While Federer actually planned to return to the tour, something unexpected happened. Mirka’s readiness to return to the tour just days after the birth of their twins made things easier for the Swiss great, who otherwise faced the difficult decision of staying away from his family. Federer acknowledged Mirka as his “rock,” who completely stood behind him through every situation while making sure to take care of their infants and kids as well.

Mirka was Roger Federer’s pillar of support throughout his career

“She’s a rock,” Federer said. “So strong, and maybe that’s from tennis as well. Her mind is very strong and also the way she’s handling everything now since the births. It’s what I expected from Mirka, because she’s such a wonderful person, but for her to prove it to me and show it to me, what a great mother she will be and is now, it’s great.”

Thus, just days after giving birth to their newborns, she did not shy away from helping Federer in whichever way she could. While traveling could have caused some great problems for her, she was ready to help her husband and make sure that he reached the top, unhindered by his responsibilities as a family man. Federer, on the other hand, always viewed her as his pillar of support, someone who always stood by his side and had his back, even in the most dire circumstances.
