Owing to his performances last year, Frances Tiafoe has achieved the kind of stardom usually reserved for Grand Slam champions. But this sort of stardom comes with a heavy price tag. It is this cost of expectation and pressure that all the top tennis players have borne and struggled with. Needless to say, it is no different in the case of Tiafoe.

All the coaches and fans have flocked to give their opinions about Big Foe and recently it was Roger Federer’s ex-coach, Paul Annacone, who showcased his strong belief in the American’s potential.

Featuring on the Tennis Channel’s Live Podcast titled Clash Of Countries, Federer’s ex-coach reveals that he is not highly concerned about Tiafoe’s current situation and would not write off a talent as promising as the American’s. Talking about the American’s recent shuffling of coaches, he points out that incompatible personalities don’t equate to a lack of talent.

“I think this is a situation where Frances is trying to figure out exactly what he needs in his corner, in his ear and to me when you’re this talented and you’re this good and you have done what Frances Tiafoe has done, it’s not really a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.” Such a statement by a tennis mind of such stature is a testament to Tiafoe’s talent.

The American dropped out of the top 10 after briefly breaching the rankings owing to scintillating performances last year. Currently outside the top 20, his last year’s loss at the US Open quarter-final to compatriot Ben Shelton triggered a chain of dismal performances, taking him further down the rankings.

At a crucial turning point in his career, Tiafoe seems to be doing what every great player has done at this checkpoint. This process of re-evaluating and re-calibrating is the reason behind the American parting ways with Diego Moyano in just under six months.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to have coached such a talented player and even more better person,” Moyano wrote. “I have no doubt that you’ll continue to shine in your tennis career, and I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way,” Moyano continued.

Having made a positive start to his clay season by running deep into an all-American final at the ATP Houston against Shelton, it’ll be interesting to see how Big Foe manages to climb the ATP rankings and who helps him do that.
