Roger Federer is an idol for a lot of young tennis players. But they do not admire him just for his on-court prowess and legacy but also his style, both on and off the court. Federer has adorned some of tennis history’s most iconic outfits of all time. We could be talking about his gold embroidered white blazer at Wimbledon in 2009. Or for that matter, the chic cardigan look of 2008 Wimbledon where he lost to his arch-rival Rafael Nadal. Looking back at it, it was one of the most jaw-dropping outfits of Federer.

Once again, after all these years, that simple yet sophisticated cardigan look has come back into the limelight. Moreover, despite losing to the Spaniard, Federer’s iconic attire has found a place that celebrates Nadal’s legacy.

2008 stunning cardigan look of Roger Federer stirs up heartwarming memories once again

Federer has engraved his legacy in the tennis realm. And though he might have left professional tennis for good, his fans remember everything. From his on-court legacy to his iconic outfits. This time, it is renowned journalist Bastien Fachan who took to his Twitter to share the jaw-dropping 2008 Wimbledon look.

The chic beige button-down cardigan surely turned heads in the crowd. With a brown-lining finish on the seam of the neckline and button line, the finely stitched cardigan became the talk of the town. Moreover, the hand-embroidered RF insignia on the chest of the cardigan became the exclusive sign of his iconic look.

Furthermore, making it even more exclusive, the buttons of the finely stitched cardigan have an “engraved” Wimbledon legacy, according to Jason Badden. The buttons were hand-turned on a wood lathe and laser-etched ‘RF5’ by Jason Badden under Nike, marking his five straight Wimbledon victories.

Moreover, though not very noticeable, the shirt worn by him underneath the sweater also has the insignia. The shorts came with a handmade belt bearing the insignia and “5” on the Wimbledon trophy icon. As a matter of fact, all the elements of his outfit were handmade, except for the cardigan which was made in Italy.

However, this outfit holds an emotional value that supersedes fashion. It was because Federer was going for his sixth straight Wimbledon title, but Nadal broke the streak.

However, Nadal, in an act of true sportsmanship, paid an iconic tribute to that outfit.

How did Rafael Nadal become the “perfect” rival of Federer?

Nadal knew as much as Federer’s fans how much the 2008 victory meant to the Swiss Maestro. Therefore, years later, he became the perfect rival as he paid a legendary tribute to Federer.

In 2016, the Swiss Maestro gifted his 2008 cardigan to Rafael Nadal Academy. Initially, the kits of the two players from their arduous battle in the finals of 2008 Wimbledon were kept together. Both Federer and Nadal posed happily in front of them.

However, for some unknown reason, the kits have been separated now.

But it does not matter because the tears shared while holding hands at last year’s Laver Cup speak more than their separated kits.
