Stanislas Wawrinka continues to surprise the fans by still going strong at 38 years of age. He has had a successful couple of weeks with a doubles title in Gstaad, and he followed it up with a runner-up plate in Umag. Severin Lüthi, the Swiss tennis coach has observed a pattern in his results, which compelled him to compare Wawrinka with his compatriot, Roger Federer.
The three-time major champion recently also moved up to 49th place in the current ATP singles rankings. His rise to the top has been remarkable as the veteran refuses to give up while he continues to defy age. As someone who has worked with Swiss tennis players for a long while, Lüthi’s comments are a refreshing insight into a tennis star’s twilight days.

In Switzerland, Federer is the face of tennis, followed by Wawrinka. But Severin Lüthi has been a part of the Swiss Davis Cup team for years and was also a longtime coach for Roger Federer. Thus, after the two greats, the fans also hold Lüthi in the highest regard. Unlike the rest of the tennis fraternity, Wawrinka’s performance level does not surprise him at all. So what exactly made him draw parallels between the two Swiss players in a recent interview?
The Swiss tennis coach was recently asked about Wawrinka’s surprisingly good form in the past. Lüthi said via Blick, “During the time when Roger was still playing, I was asked again and again if his successes had surprised me. Now it’s exactly the same with Stan: I’m prepared for the surprise because I know how much work he puts into it.” According to him, Federer defied age to win titles in his late thirties and Wawrinka is doing something similar now.

Lüthi then weighed in on Stan’s love for the game and his hunger to keep going, which was pretty evident in his recent post-match interview. He further added, “If he stays healthy, I will definitely trust him to have another title. Can he win a Grand Slam tournament again? That looks difficult. But here, too, I say: Stan must never be written off.”
The tennis coach believes that Stan still has the level to win titles, even though the fourth Grand Slam might be evasive. However, one of the biggest lessons tennis has taught us is, ‘Never write off Stan Wawrinka’. Do you think that Stan Wawrinka can win another major title in the ATP tour before retiring?
