In tennis, there are hardly a few people who get a chance to end their career in the way that they want to. However, Roger Federer was certainly not one among those. An undenied tennis legend, the Swiss star battled with injury and just played in the Laver Cup before announcing his retirement. Just one year later, his friend-cum-rival, Rafael Nadal has also announced that 2024 could well be his last year on the tennis court.

However, with the Spaniard stepping on the court after almost a year, the expectations would not be very high. Talking about the same, his head coach, Carlos Moya, in an interview, reflects on how the Swiss star did not get a perfect farewell in the sport. Not only this, but he also talked about what could happen with Nadal as well.

In a recent revelation, Rafael Nadal’s coach Carlos Moya went ahead and talked about how players like Roger Federer could not get the farewell that they needed. Regarded as a legend of the game, the Swiss maestro was out of the court for a while before making a comeback at the Laver Cup last year. That was his last tournament ever as a professional player.

However, he further suggested that few tennis stars get the perfect ending they hope for. Federer’s unexpected exit has made him think about Rafael Nadal’s future goodbye. Carlos Moya, knowing the game inside out, might have some clues about how Nadal wants to end his amazing career.

“’I don’t think I deserve to end like this, at a press conference.’ That’s what he said when he announced in May that he was stopping for surgery, but that he intended to return so he could say goodbye. That was surely what happened to Roger Federer, who couldn’t say goodbye the way he would have wanted. Nobody can say that sport is fair. Of all the great players who have retired throughout history… few have done it the way they wanted,” said Moya in the interview.

Federer’s unfinished story teaches us that in tennis, and maybe in life, we can’t always control how things wrap up. Nadal’s exit might follow a different script, but in this game of uncertainty, the perfect farewell remains a challenge for even the greatest players.

However, further in the interview, Moya went ahead and talked about a few players, who according to him, did manage to have a perfect ending that they would have hoped for.

Carlos Moya talks about players who ended their careers on a high

Further in the interview, he went ahead and talked about the athletes who had the perfect ending to their careers. One of the professionals that he talked about was Pete Sampras. The American legend, according to him ended his career on a high. The same was the case with Stefan Edberg, who according to him played his best game during his final year as a professional athlete.

“Sampras, perhaps, is the one who comes to mind as someone who has retired as he wanted, winning and being at the top. Of the others, Edberg on his day retired announcing that it was his last year, playing great tennis and being current,” Moya further added in the interview.

Thus, not every player in the tennis world can get the perfect ending that they want. While the likes of Sampras and Edberg ended their career on a high, Roger Federer did not have that fate. The same concern is with Rafa and it will be interesting to see how his career ends.

One take at a time

In a world where player rivalries dominate social media conversations, I am someone who prefers to enjoy the skills showcased on the court rather than be involved in feuds over the greatness of players. Right from my early childhood, I have been engrossed by the legendary rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It turned me into a ?Fedal? fan and eventually, when I graduated from college, this fandom created an interest in covering their exploits on the court.
