When it comes to tennis, the debate about which is better, winning gold at the Olympics or winning a grand slam is never-ending. While there are many who weigh both these opportunities equally, there are many who offer completely different perspectives on this debate. One among them is Jimmy Connors. The legendary American player, who caused havoc on the tennis courts, shared his 2 cents on the debate.

In a recent podcast, Connors went ahead to reveal what made him different from others and why he has never been a fan of the Olympics. He also talked about his reason for disliking the Olympics and why he never got a chance to play there.

In the ongoing debate about the Grand Slam titles versus the Olympics in tennis, Jimmy Connors has shared his own thoughts. Connors took weight on his individualistic approach to tennis, stating that he was never a “team guy.”

He said that tennis in the Olympics became prominent in the latter stages of his career. He believed that both wins and losses in the game were his own responsibilities as he did not prefer to play in a team. He also admitted that winning a Grand Slam was more important for him, even if it meant letting go of the opportunity to secure a gold medal for the United States during his prime.

“You know, for me, you’re right, tennis in the Olympics came, mostly after I was in the latter stages of my career. And, as I always say, I was never a team guy. You know, I was always an individual and wanted to take full responsibility when I won, and I wanted the full responsibility when I lost. So, you can call me selfish, whatever you want. But, you know, for me, winning a Grand Slam would have been more important, you know, so which would have given other guys an opportunity to win the gold medal for the US during my time,” said Connors about his opinion on the ongoing debate.

Thus, Connors offered his views on the same as he did not seem to much give importance to tennis as he felt that he was rather a solo person than preferred to play with a team. However, he is not the only one who thinks this way. A former tennis player, who is now playing as a professional pickleball player, also offered his views on the same.

Former player who ended Novak Djokovic’s winning streak also offers his opinion on the same debate

Sam Querrey, who was a tennis professional turned pickleball player, offered his opinion on the same debate. Sam is the same player who ended Novak Djokovic‘s 30-match winning streak at Wimbledon. He said that every professional player would certainly choose to win a grand slam rather than an Olympic medal.

“I feel like the Olympics should only be sports where, like, that’s the pinnacle of your sport: If you win the Olympics, there’s nothing better,” said Querrey. “But I think for tennis, you ask anyone, they’d rather win a Grand Slam over the Olympics.”
