Day four of the Australian Open 2022 is underway and we are about to see one of the biggest matches in the second round. Fans are really excited about the match between world no.2 Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios. The Russian is definitely the favorite coming into the encounter, but Nick can cause a serious upset.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou posted an analysis video on Instagram before the high voltage match-up. Mouratoglou also said that Medvedev looks a clear favorite because of his high ranking, but Nick can surprise the World No.2 player.

Patrick Mouratoglou thinks Daniil Medvedev is the one of the favorites to win the Australian Open with Novak Djokovic already out. However, Daniil will face probably his biggest threat in the second round in Nick Kyrgios, the flamboyant Australian. Mouratoglou detailed four strategies that Nick has used in the past to beat Medvedev. 

Daniil Medvedev stands way far behind the baseline and that’s an advantage against the big servers. To beat that, Kyrgios needs to use short out wide serves a lot to get Medvedev far outside the court which will force the Russian to move forward to cut the angle. 

With Medvedev standing far behind the baseline, Nick has to use the short ball a lot to push the Russian into an uncomfortable situation.

Kyrgios can use his underarm serves and drop shots a lot against the world n0.2 player. Because those tactics are very effective against players standing far behind the baseline.

Kyrgios needs to put an incredible amount of pressure when returning. The Australian needs to go for a return-volley option quite often and forces his opponent to go for a passing shot.

Mouratoglou also has a word of advice for the Russian, as he thinks Daniil needs to return well in this match. Also, he needs to be aggressive from the baseline to avoid being under Nick’s pressure. However, Daniil can’t go all out because that will increase the unforced errors, and the Russian needs to find the right balance.

Who will win between Medvedev and Kyrgios?

Daniil Medvedev might look the clear favorite, but no one should forget their head-to-head records. Nick Kyrgios has an advantage of 2-0 over the Russian. Nick pretty much played his own game, like Mouratoglou said, and won both their previous encounters.  

Also, the crowd will fully support the Australian in Melbourne. It will be one of the matches of the tournament for sure and we will know the winner in a few hours from now.
