Annemarie Ruegg, who closely witnessed his growth, recalled a memorable episode from the 1998 Orange Bowl in Miami.

During the tournament, Roger sprained his foot while goofing around with a skipping rope. Despite being in the quarter-finals and threatened with elimination, he showed his determination, worked with the team’s physiotherapist, Paul Dorochenko, and managed to not only continue playing but win the tournament.

Ruegg also highlighted the role of Mirka Vavrinec, who became Roger’s girlfriend during her time as a member of the Swiss Tennis squad. Mirka’s dedication and strong personality helped the Swiss star’s journey, providing him with crucial support and stability. Since then, she has become an essential part of Federer’s squad and helped him while guiding him to become one of the greatest of the game.

Mirka became the ideal complement to Roger. She didn’t have it easy as a young tennis player; she had to assert herself. She had a lot of stamina, and she needed it to succeed. She is ambitious and persistent, a tough personality, but she also has charm. The fact that Roger found a relationship with her early on, which solidified him, was essential,’ said Ruegg while giving insights about the beautiful relationship between Roger Federer and Mirka.
