Stan Wawrinka Encourages Juan Martin del Potro, as He Tearfully Bids Goodbye to Tennis

Yesterday, former US Open winner, Juan Martin del Potro, possibly said his goodbye to the tennis world. In the first round of the Argentina Open, del Potro lost to his fellow Argentine Federico Delbonis in straight sets. Near the end of the match, Delpo could not hold back his tears, as he felt this was probably his last ever match.

Many fans and tennis stars reacted to del Potro after that emotional match. 3-time Grand Slam winner and former US Open champion, Stan Wawrinka also reacted, as he posted on social media.

Many tennis stars, like Fabio Fognini, Frances Tiafoe, Sebastian Korda, and others have reached out to del Potro on social media. They posted some heartfelt messages and Stan Wawrinka is the latest person to post after seeing an emotional del Potro at the Argentina Open.

The Swiss player reacted with a few emojis, conveying the message to stay strong.

In the past, Wawrinka and del Potro had many memorable battles. Many remember their US Open 2016 quarter-final match, where the Swiss player beat Delpo in a tremendous match. Earlier in the same year, Delpo beat Wawrinka in the Wimbledon Championships. 

Lately, Wawrinka has also been suffering from various injuries. Currently, he is still recovering and will be out of the tennis court for a while. 

Can del Potro make a comeback?

At the Argentina Open, del Potro lost to Federico Delbonis by 1-6,3-6, in 1 hour and 23 minutes. Although Delbonis won the match, the story was about the hometown hero, del Potro. The Argentinian crowd showed their full respect and support for Delpo, chanting “Ole Delpo” throughout the match.

After the match against, Delpo showed some love for the crowd and possibly gave some hope to the fans about his return. “I don’t know if it’s going to happen, because the pain in my knee is very high. But I will keep doing a big effort to fix the knee, and if I get that, maybe I will have another chance to play,” the Argentine said after the match. 

Earlier, Delpo had talked about playing in the Rio Open after the Argentina Open. The Argentine stated, “I will speak to doctors again. I have to take care of my knee and then we will see.”
