Stan Wawrinka has suffered from a few injuries in his illustrious career, but none were as big as the knee injury he had during the 2017 ATP tour. The surgery that followed made it difficult for Wawrinka to make his way back to the top.

But, the Swiss star continued his climb with immense grit and managed to find his way inside the top-15 of men’s rankings by the start of 2020. However, after playing a few tournaments in the 2021 season, Wawrinka had to exit the Tour to undergo a foot surgery.

Stan Wawrinka to drop out of top-100 for the first time in three years

Since then, the Swiss has been in rehab mode and is yet to make an appearance on the big stage. Currently ranked no.82 in the men’s singles rankings, Stan Wawrinka is all set to lose 19 places and will fall out of top-100 for the first time in three years after pulling out of the 2022 Australian Open.

Stan Wawrinka’s consecutive withdrawals from multiple tournaments are the reason for this drop. The Swiss star last played at the Qatar Open, where he lost in the opening round to Lloyd Harris.

After the ‘happy slam’ this year, the Swiss will lose a total of 90 points and will be ranked 101st in singles rankings.

Ever since his comeback from knee surgery, Wawrinka displayed glimpses of his former self at slams as he had difficulty in reaching the second week consistently owing to the drop in the rankings.

Wawrinka witnessed moderate success after knee surgery comeback

2019 was a good year for the Swiss in terms of Grand Slam performances. Wawrinka made it to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros after defeating youngster Stefanos Tsitsipas in an epic five-set thriller. However, Stan lost to compatriot Roger Federer in the last eight.

At the 2019 US Open, Wawrinka managed to reach yet another quarter-final, where he lost to Daniil Medvedev. In the same tournament, Stan surpassed Djokovic in the round of 16 as the latter retired from the match after dropping the first two sets.

Seeing Stan Wawrinka back in full glory will be a feast for many tennis fans but with each passing year, there appears to be a minimal chance of that happening. The Swiss star is yet to decide on his comeback tournament this year.
