Although Wawrinka was most probably joking, he may feel skeptical about today’s match. Notably, he won the first match in 456 days in the first round of the Italian Open after beating Reilly Opelka. After going through foot surgery in 2021, he missed playing for over a year. After winning his first match, he talked about his fans and how they helped him massively to get back on track.

In their previous 25 meetings, Novak won 19 and Stan won only six. However, 4 of 6 wins came at the Grand Slam events for the Swiss player. And he beat Novak twice in the final of Roland Garros (2015) and the US Open (2016). Clearly, the 3-time Grand Slam winner has an edge over Novak at the Grand Slam tournaments.
