Ever since winning his first grand slam title at the US Open last year, Austria’s tennis icon Dominic Thiem found it hard to deliver consistent performances this year on the ATP tour. With a huge lineup of youngsters knocking the doors at big tournaments, the Austrian found himself at the receiving end of some crushing defeats against players like Lloyd Harris, Lorenzo Sonego, Cameron Norrie, etc.

Even at Roland Garros, the Austrian failed to live up to the expectations as he was outlasted by Spain’s Pablo Andujar in five sets in the opening round match. As part of his Wimbledon preparation, Thiem decided to play the inaugural Mallorca Championships in Spain, and got his wrist injured during the matchup against Adrian Mannarino.

The same injury forced Dominic Thiem to stay out of contention for the remainder of the ATP season this year. As rehab continues for the Austrian, he joins Tennis Channel to share views and opinions on various matches during the fortnight at the US Open.

During one of the discussions, Thiem got candid about his mother’s tradition of getting tattoos whenever he wins a big title at the tour level. The tradition started when the Austrian won his first Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells in 2019, where he defeated Roger Federer in three sets.

When Tennis Channel‘s Steve Weissman asked Thiem about the tattoo his mother got when he won his first major title at the US Open last year, the Austrian revealed that it was a tattoo of the famous ‘Statue of Liberty’ in New York.

It was the Statue of Liberty. It’s one of the most famous buildings from New York, so she decided to do that”, Thiem said.

Despite a dry run on the ATP tour this year, Dominic Thiem managed to register few victories against the likes of Nick Kyrgios, John Isner, and Aslan Karatsev. Post Wimbledon, a lot of top tennis stars like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams, decided to withdraw from the US Open along with Dominic Thiem.
