The idea of a premium elite tour for top players has recently aroused the curiosity of many in the tennis community. Top players ‘consisting of Grand Slams, Masters 1000s, and ATP Finals,’ can play in these tournaments while skipping other smaller events. Taking note of the same, Taylor Fritz has now come forward to issue his take on this concept.

While many fans have lashed out at the separation of the ATP Tour, the American tennis star has showcased his support for the idea of the premium elite tour. Notably, the former world No. 5 player recently became a target of scrutiny from the public for his defiant stance on the controversial concept.

In a recent interview, the American tennis star supported the idea of the premium tour by calling it a ‘really good idea.’ Fritz opened up about how he believes that a player on the main or top tour should be set to play all the big tournaments. The ATP player said that it will make the sport much easier to follow for fans because all they have to pay attention to are those events.

“You can have 14 marquee events, and it makes tennis easy to follow for fans because all you have to pay attention to is those tournaments,” Fritz said. However, the world No. 10 player’s honest take on the premium tour didn’t go down well with fans, as they lashed out at him on social media. One fan tweeted, “And those who go down, where will they play to earn a living?”

It received a quick response from Fritz as he commented, “Same tournaments u currently would be playing if ur outside 120….”

A fan deemed the American player’s recent statement a ‘snide comment’ as he asserted that Fritz should have explained it better. He said, “Really could have done without the snide comment to start things off. Nothing wrong with your first thought being “maybe I could have explained it better”.

Similarly, another fan brutally criticized Fritz by commenting, “Win a grand slam first and stop talking like an elite player, bud.”

Another user asserted that an open system throughout the season is ‘very good’ for the competition. The fan said, “You literally want top 100-120 players to be protected at least for a year ? why ? An open system throughout the year is very good for the competition, especially for those fighting for the cutoff rankings, main draw or seedings spots at big events like slams, Masters 1000 etc ..”

In the comments section, a fan also brought to light how there are profitable secondary tours in the sport of golf. He said, “Terrible idea. In golf you still have profitable secondary tours which hundreds of players can make a living off (European, Korn Ferry).

The user added, “You’d be condemning everyone outside Top 120 for an entire year to play Challengers and ITF, without any chance of playing even tour qualies.”
