The former American tennis star, Andre Agassi, dominated the ATP tour, along with his rival Pete Sampras, in the 90s. The 8-time Grand Slam champion was known for his passionate and fierce style of play throughout his stellar tennis career.

Despite being at the peak of his powers and enjoying a very successful tennis career, the American tennis star was once called a “fashion savant”. Agassi revealed in 2014 how he entered the fashion industry during his stellar tennis journey.

Andre Agassi once talked about how he got inclined toward fashion

Apart from being a tennis pro, the 4-time Australian Open winner was called a rebellious star in the 90s. Agassi once stated that he rebelled against a lot of things during his tennis journey, including his colorful tennis attire choices. The former American tennis player was often there in the spotlight because of his on-court fashion attire.

Additionally, Agassi also talked about his interest in the fashion industry during the 1990s. ‘The Punisher’ further revealed how felt after he was called a “fashion savant.” Agassi stated in an exclusive interview with the Cut in 2014, “But everything I did in 1995 was an accident. I was very accident-prone. I stumbled into one hell of a life. So, I think that it was a fair comment. A lot of people at the time thought I was expressing myself, but I was really exploring myself.”

Agassi was often a topic of debate because of his distinctive fashion choices. However, he never let others’ opinions affect his fashion attire on the tennis court. Devon Burt, Nike’s creative director, once described one of Agassi-designed Nike collections as “ugly.”

To this, the American tennis star responded bluntly as he stated, “The goal was never to be ugly in my mind…I was always clear. I was anti-establishment for a long time, which morphed into other perspectives.” Throughout his stellar tennis journey, Agassi showcased his authenticity with his brilliant performances and in his fashion choices.

Agassi was an endorser of Nike

After starting his tennis journey in the 90s, Agassi initially signed with the popular sports brand, Nike. However, he later made a switch to another popular brand, Adidas, in 2005. During that period, Agassi’s wife and former German tennis player, Steffi Graf, also signed with Adidas.

However, after eight years with the German brand, Agassi returned to Nike in 2013. Agassi also made an announcement on his social media as he proudly posted an image of himself with Nike’s logo. The former tennis player was a part of the ‘Designed to Move’ campaign as he created awareness about the importance of physical health education. Agassi, as an ambassador of the campaign, inspired many children of the current generation to participate in physical activities.
