For more than two decades, the ‘Big Three’ have carried men’s tennis on their shoulders. However, with Roger Federer out of the picture and both Nadal and Djokovic in the twilight years of their careers, there’s a huge question mark on the future of the sport. Former World No.1 Jimmy Connors discussed the passing of time in tennis with his son Brett. The father and son duo mainly talked about the new-age players filling the gap, especially Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Brett Connors hosts the Advantage Connors podcast with his father. The podcast covers the world of tennis one episode at a time. The Connors duo covered several recent topics in their latest episode. This is what led them to the youngsters and their turn to rule. What started as a candid chat over Roger Federer’s retirement and Rafael Nadal soon took a different turn.

Jimmy Connor is one of the veterans of the ATP Tour and thus his insights and suggestions hold a lot of value. The podcast is such a hit, probably because Jimmy shares his knowledge with everyone. In their latest episode, while addressing the future of tennis, Connors said:

“They’re (Alcaraz and Sinner) the future of the game. I mean, we talk about that all the time, and, and the pressure and that’s put on them. Now, Federer is gone. Nadal, I think he’s maybe back practicing now. Who knows what his schedule is going to be or how long he wants to play, or even to be able to play? You don’t know that. So the next generation, it’s their turn, is their time.”

It’s true that Federer’s retirement and Nadal’s uncertain schedule created a void. Naturally, the next generation of players is now expected to take the lead. There is no telling whether Nadal will actually be back to play a few more games or not. That leaves the ATP with just Novak Djokovic, who is keeping the top spot all to himself.

Although Carlos is making it tough for Djokovic to keep his spot, the Spaniard is relatively young and new to the game. Yet, his talent mixed with the wise head of his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, Alcaraz certainly has the potential to take away Djokovic’s spot.

Between Alcaraz and Sinner, who will win the race to the top?

Carlos and Sinner have been trying to beat Novak for quite some time now. Carlos even got the chance to be at the top spot for some time. However, Novak claimed his throne soon. Carlos lost the semi-final round at the China Open against Sinner. This will surely cause problems for him to reach his goals.

Sinner, on the other hand, came on top in the tournament. His final match was against Daniil Medvedev, whom he defeated by 7-6(2) and 7-6(2). Medvedev gave tough competition to Sinner. However, the Italian star had his eyes set on the win. So, while Carlos failed to win, Jannik moved further ahead towards his goal.

What Jimmy Connor said about the youngsters was quite accurate. As the legends make their way out of tennis, new talent has to shine harder to make a name for themselves.
