Stan Wawrinka, the Swiss tennis professional with a career highest ranking of world no.3 in ATP, is back on the courts after a long break from tennis. Stan suffered a foot injury at the start of the year 2021. Since then, he appeared briefly in the Challenger Tour event in Marbella in March. Thereafter, he stepped into his first ATP 1000 tournament of this year in Monte Carlo.

Even though Stan by outclassed by Alexander Bublik in his very first match of the tournament, he is aware of his potential. As he recently admitted that he has the capability of sacring the legend, Novak Djokovic.

Stan Wawrinka Scares Novak Djokovic

Upon being asked about his claim, he gave a fair explanation. He said, “He knows that physically I can compete with him. Three-four hours or more. He knows it. Forehand, backhand when I play well, none of the sides is my weak spot.”

Further, he elaborated on world no.1’s playing style and said, “Novak is one of the greatest players of all time. And what he likes, when it is tense, is to focus on a weak spot from the opponent and stick him into it. Against me, he struggles to do that.”

And as Stan earlier stated that when in peak form, there is no such this as a weak spot in his tennis. Thus, he concluded his claim by saying, “When I played him during those periods, I was on top. It was more complicated. We see it in Roland, and at US Open it’s the same. He was playing the forehand. It was a winner backhand same. These are really the matches when I played best in my career. He knows that scares him.” 

“It’s Going To Be The Only Option” – Stan Wawrinka on Playing Behind Closed Doors

Wawrinka thrashed Djokovich in the 2015 Roland Garros finals by 4-6,6-4, 6-3, 6-4, thus clinching the title. Following this, he out-muscled the Serbian in the fourth round of the US Open 2019 by 6-5, 7-5, 2-1.

What Lies Ahead for Wawrinka?

After an early exit from Monte Carlo Masters, Stan Wawrinka has opted to stay out of the circuit till the French Open 2022. Although his game at Monte Carlo wasn’t entirely subpar as we got some glimpse of Wawrinka at his peak.

Therefore, it can be said that he isn’t done with tennis. However, his recent comeback and lack of fitness could be a workable reason for his evading Belgrade and Barcelona Open. Both the events will be played simultaneously just after the Monte Carlo finals between 18th April to 24th April.

A week off the court might help Stan Wawrinka gain a stable physical condition, and he sure did get a chance to reconnect with his game in Monte Carlo. Thus, the chances of him showing playing some good tennis at Roland Garros this year are strong.
