Novak Djokovic made Melbourne his again. With 10 Australian Open triumphs and 22 Grand Slam titles, the Serbian has equaled the record of one of his arch-rivals Rafael Nadal. But that was not enough to please the former world no. 1 Boris Becker. He still feels that the legacy set by Roger Federer is unassailable. Even though the other two members of the ‘Big Three’ have more Grand Slam titles, it will take more than that to topple the Swiss Maestro.

Since his retirement, Federer has embraced his off-court life with vigor, exploring different realms. However, the tennis world is not and can never forget the astounding achievements of the tennis legend.

From evaluating the impact of Nadal’s injuries to Djokovic’s perseverance to get what he wants, Becker has covered a lot of interesting topics since he came back from prison. And it was time Federer came into the picture.

In Eurosport Germany’s tennis podcast ‘Das Gelbe vom Ball’, Becker stated, “Maybe the sports ambassador, not just tennis ambassador. The world hasn’t seen anything like that yet.” He added, “You can take footballers and basketball players and track and field athletes.”

Addressing his holistic childhood, Becker noted, “This total package Roger Federer – and then he also grew up in neutral Switzerland.” He noted Federer’s role in making tennis a well-known sport.

Becker stated, “With Roger, everything is so perfect, almost too good to be true. That will never happen again in tennis and that is also why tennis has become such a global sport.” With one final subtle message to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, Becker concluded, “Good luck to the guys who want to take over.”

The GOAT debate has gone on for years and is still too inconclusive to decide who is the best amongst the ‘Big 3’.

Djokovic, a self-made legend who made his name without the support of his country

Well, Becker mentioned a fact when he talked about Federer’s ideal childhood. But the lack of that did not make Djokovic stay behind the curtain. Irrespective of the struggles he has gone through, Djokovic made sure to put in the work to be the best.

According to The Age, his agent mentioned that unlike Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, Serbia was not behind Djokovic. He carved a way out for himself.

Even during his victory speech, Djokovic mentioned how he and Stefanos Tsitsipas come from small countries, and young aspiring players should not feel demoralized even if they do not come from conventional tennis playing ones.
