While Djokovic has opted to respect the government’s order, that doesn’t seem to be the case with John McEnroe. The American legend recently erupted at the government over Djokovic’s participation. It soon took a bigger turn when cyclist Bob Jungels won a stage of the Tour de France, being COVID positive.
John McEnroe comes out in support of Djokovic
Ever since the pandemic, players are being tested prior to each event throughout the sporting world. Similarly, it was the case with Bob Jungels. Gearing up for the 9th stage of the ongoing Tour de France, the Luxembourg cyclist underwent a Covid-19 test, which came out positive.
However, despite being positive, he was allowed to participate in the race. Not only did he participate, but he also went on to win the stage.

Learning about Bob’s win, a furious McEnroe took no time to come out in public and criticize the American government. “The U.S. cannot be serious. These politicians are getting in the way too much,” he started.
Recalling the unpleasant exit of Djokovic from Australia, McEnroe further called out the American government’s decision to be ‘ridiculous’. “They did it in Australia. Let’s let the guy come in and play in the U.S. I mean, come on. This is ridiculous,” he added.
Novak Djokovic reacts to his doubtful participation at the US Open
While McEnroe lashed out at the government, Djokovic, on the other hand, showed a calm approach. The 3-time US Open champion asserted that his participation in the US Open is in the hands of the American government.

He said, “I would love to go to States. But as of today, that’s not possible. There is not much I can do anymore. I mean, it’s really up to the U.S. government to make a decision whether or not they allow unvaccinated people to go into the country.”
