Grylls expressed his deep admiration for the game of tennis, emphasizing its one-on-one nature. He shared his love for tennis because there is nowhere to hide from facing an opponent on the court. He spoke,” For me, I love tennis. I love watching tennis and love playing tennis. I like it cause it feels gladiatorial. It feels like mano a mano you know.”
He also added, “It’s like one on one. There is nowhere to hide. And it rewards courage and patience and skill and commitment and physicality. And I think, uh I think my favorite player is Roger Federer. (He is) Super kind of like way tougher and more resilient and fierce than you necessarily think.”

He also asked the Swiss tennis legend for advice on how to improve his game. He said how he often loses and humorously recalled how he was beaten by his oldest son in a tough game. Grylls had also jokingly referred to the mini ping-pong match he lost to Federer on the mountain expedition earlier. However, he added that he would be willing to challenge the tennis legend in contact tennis.
