Former Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has numerous records to his name. While he faced heavy competition from Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, a few of his records still stay away from their grasp. One such record of Federer is being the oldest tour-level championship title winner. With Djokovic at 35, and Nadal struggling already at 36, the chances for these two are less. However, surprisingly, another player, outside of the ‘Big Three’, is closing in on Federer’s record. It’s the American tennis star, John Isner.

John Isner is inching closer to the record of Roger Federer

John Isner is among the most experienced tennis players on the ATP Tour currently. The American is currently 37 years old and is still pretty fit. Playing in the Dallas Open, he defeated compatriot JJ Wolf to make it to the finals. If he manages to win the title, he will be the second oldest tennis player to win a tour-level title.

Isner has worked hard to reach the finals and it will be interesting to see if he can cross the final hurdle. In the final, he is going to face Wu Yibing, who comes in with a lot of confidence after beating world number eight Taylor Fritz in the semifinal.

Why Djokovic and Nadal can never replace Federer

Roger Federer retired with 20 Grand Slam titles to his name. Until 2021, it was a tie between Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic for the most Grand Slam titles. However, a severe knee injury sidelined Federer for more than a year. Taking this opportunity, Nadal went past both his rivals and made it 22 titles by the middle of last season.

Later, Djokovic clinched his 21st major title at 2022 Wimbledon, followed by his 22nd at the Australian Open 2023. Although Nadal and Djokovic comfortably crossed Federer and are currently on top with 22 titles each, many still consider Federer the GOAT.
