In the competitive world of tennis, injuries are an inevitable part of an athlete’s journey. While some players handle these setbacks with grace and support, others yearn for understanding during challenging times. Nick Kyrgios, the enigmatic Aussie player, recently expressed a heartfelt desire for empathy, longing for his withdrawal from the ATP Tour to be taken in a similar way to that of fellow player Pablo Carreño Busta.

The 2023 tennis season has been fraught with injuries for Kyrgios, disrupting his quest for greatness on the court. Busta faced a similar fate to Kyrgios, but the treatment was not as similar. Renowned sports journalist José Morgado tweeted about the talented Spanish player, who recently pulled out of a couple championships due to a major injury.

It all started when Morgado shared the news of Carreño Busta’s unfortunate injury. Morgado tweeted, “Pablo Carreño Busta withdraws from Canada (was defending champ) and Cincinnati due to his terrible right elbow injury. His last match was in February, but he is still top 25 because of those 1000 points. He will leave the top 100.”

In response, Kyrgios retweeted the news and captioned it, “Hope he gets well soon. Wish I got similar understanding when missing tournaments with injury.” This behavior is not new for Kyrgios, who is known for stirring up controversy both on and off the court.

Many people have responded negatively to Kyrgios’ post, accusing him of making Carreño Busta’s injury news all about himself. Regardless of his behavior on twitter, Kyrgios’ 2023 season has been marred with injuries, rendering the 2022 Wimbledon finalist to miss out on quite a lot of matches and championships.

A rollercoaster 2023 season marred with injuries

As the 2023 tennis season progresses, Kyrgios finds himself battling one injury after another. After a heartbreaking loss in the 2022 Wimbledon finals against Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios was determined to make a strong comeback. However, fate had different plans. The 28-year-old announced his withdrawal from the 2023 Wimbledon Championships due to a wrist injury, dealing with yet another blow to his aspirations.

Kyrgios also shared that he suffered the injury while preparing for the Mallorca Open, and that the tests revealed a torn ligament. This wrist injury followed his absence from the Australian and French Opens due to a knee problem. With only one match played in 2023, Kyrgios’ ranking has dropped to No. 35 in the world, a far cry from his previous prominent position of World no. 13 in 2016.

It’s worth noting that Kyrgios’ journey to the Wimbledon finals last year was not without controversy. He advanced to the final after Rafael Nadal withdrew before their semi-final clash. Despite this achievement, Kyrgios couldn’t claim the coveted title, losing to Djokovic in a marathon match that lasted over three hours.
